• Equine piroplasmosis, which poses no risks to humans, is transmitted from infected horses by tropical horse ticks who take in their blood and then move on, through hay, bedding or feed, to uninfected horses.
• Dr . Ralph Knowles, a field veterinarian in the Maryland Department of Agriculture who has done research on the disease, said the tropical horse tick exists in the extreme southern parts of the United States.
• Tropical horse ticks do not attach themselves to animals other than horses and are found in tropical and subtropical areas of the Caribbean and South America, as well as in temperate zones of southern Europe.
